Democrats Candidate Unknown: Good or Bad?

While Obama seems to be on the path to claiming the Democratic nomination, it is amazing that we are entering March with such a tight race. Although I have not closely observed many elections, this is the first election I can remember where there is not a clear distinction of who will be the Democratic candidate. This issue led to a discussion within my group of friends. Our question to each other is how this will impact the Democrats campaign for presidency. The conclusion of our conversation showed both pros and cons to the current situation.

Pros:
  • The Democratic Party can begin exposing weaknesses in John McCain's campaign and policies. The Republican Party still does not know who they need to target.
  • The Democratic candidates are getting more exposure.
  • The Democratic candidates are gaining valuable debate experience that will help them prepare for debate during the general election.

Cons:
  • The Democratic Party is losing time to unify itself between the primaries and the election.
  • Obama and Clinton are criticizing one another so much that the Republicans do not have to worry about attacking either candidate.
  • More exposure leads to more chances to make mistakes that can come back and hurt the candidates later on.
Do you think that the Democrats close Primary race is harming or helping the party? Why or why not?

I believe that the split-hair situation Democrats are in actually does them more harm than good. Though they are getting exposure, much of it is negative, especially for Hillary Clinton. This makes the party as a whole look bad. In addition, I think this kind of exposure does more to weaken and polarize the party because as people become more passionate for thier candidate and the competition increases, many will dislike the opponent more. And no matter who wins, the Democrats need a strong, UNIFIED front. While the Dems are still sorting out this part of the Presidential process, Republicans are preparing for the next stage of competition. As the Democrats become more and more exhausted in the primary, the Republicans can entertain themselves watching the "circus," as we referred to in another post. I worry that the Dems are using all of their energy in the primary, and when it comes to the final race they may not have enough gas left. Overall, I think the negatives outweigh the positives, and I hope this primary can come to a clean finish.

I believe that it is helping the democratic party because the democratic issues, concerns, strengths, and weaknesses are getting more coverage than they ever have before. This race for candidacy will go down in history, and for us to be in the midst of it, America is become more political. Being that there is two incredibly strong candidates, America is paying closer attention to each one's positions and stances. At this point, I couldn't be more proud to be a democrat because of all of the hype, and the importance of the Democratic candidacy is the 2008 Election. This race to the top is absolutley helping the democratic party, and shining a positive light on deomocrats in our nation.
