Obama covers Rolling Stone

...and, as a result, has one more thing in common with Kanye West

I think the decision by "Rolling Stone" magazine to put Obama on the cover is very interesting. The magazine has been endorsing presidential candidates since 1972, beginning with Democrat George McGovern, but this is the first time that the publication has endorsed a contender for the White House during the primaries. It goes back to what we have been talking about in class about Obama and his connection to the youth movement in our country. Obama is using music in a way you don't see too often. First, Will.I.AM. did the music video and now Obama is featured on the cover of one of the most influential music publications in circulation. I think it's interesting that they chose to endorse Obama even though he has yet to win the Demomcratic nomination. There is a long road ahead for both candidates (Obama and Clinton), but it's pretty apparent that the Obama campaign has been very successful at tapping into youth culture and the arts.

I don't think that any of today's most influential music publications are monthly and/or in print, but there's a mythology/tradition of imagined influence that I'll agree to see. Rolling Stone is like the MTV of magazines... are they really telling us about anything we haven't been listening to/seeing on blogs for months?
